Rules overview
Players: 4–5 Playing Time: 30–45 minutes Age: 10+
In Divide, players shape their hands through The Great Divide, a double cut-and-choose exchange with their neighbors. Each round begins with a secret Trump Offering, followed by a hand-sculpting exchange, a randomly revealed Trump Rank, and eight tricks scored through a limited supply of suit-based tokens.
Components
- 1 standard 52-card deck
- 12 × 2-point Suit Tokens 3 Spades
- 3 Hearts
- 3 Diamonds
- 3 Clubs
- 5 × 5-point Bonus Tokens
- Score sheet, paper, or preferred score tracker
- 1 Dealer marker, optional
Goal
Earn the most points across four rounds by winning tricks and collecting scoring tokens.
Card Ranking
Cards rank from high to low:
A > K > Q > ... > 3 > 2
When cards of the same rank must be compared, suits rank:
Spades > Hearts > Diamonds > Clubs
This suit ranking is most commonly used when more than one card of the Trump Rank is played in the same trick.
Setup
- Place three matching 2-point Suit Tokens in a stack for each suit.
- Place the five 5-point Bonus Tokens nearby as a common supply.
- Choose the first Dealer: the player who most recently visited the Grand Canyon, or
- choose randomly.
- Shuffle the deck.
The player immediately clockwise from the Dealer is the First Player for the round.
Play proceeds clockwise.
Round Structure
Each round has four phases:
- Deal
- The Great Divide
- Trick Play
- Cleanup
1. Deal Phase
Deal 9 cards to each player.
Any undealt cards are set aside unseen until the end of the round.
2. The Great Divide
Trump Offering
Each player secretly chooses 1 card from their 9-card hand and places it face-down in the center as their Trump Offering.
Trump Offerings remain hidden until The Great Divide is complete.
Each player now has 8 cards.
Secure Two Cards
From your remaining 8 cards, choose 2 cards to Secure.
Place these cards face-down in front of you.
Your Secured Cards cannot be taken by another player.
Create Your Offers
Take your remaining 6 cards and divide them into two separate 3-card Offers.
- Place one Offer face-down toward the player on your left.
- Place the other Offer face-down toward the player on your right.
Do not reveal either Offer until every player has completed their own divide.
Choose From Each Offer
Once all Offers have been placed, resolve the Offer received from each neighbor separately.
For one Offer:
- Pick up only those 3 cards.
- Examine them.
- Choose exactly 2 cards to keep.
- Place those 2 cards face-down with your Secured Cards.
- Return the remaining card face-down to the player who made that Offer.
Repeat the same process with the Offer received from your other neighbor.
Never combine the two Offers into one group of six cards. Each Offer is chosen from independently.
Once both of your rejected cards have been returned, gather:
- your 2 Secured Cards,
- the 2 cards selected from your left neighbor,
- the 2 cards selected from your right neighbor,
- the 1 card returned from your left-hand Offer,
- the 1 card returned from your right-hand Offer.
You now have your final 8-card hand for the round.
Reveal Trump
Shuffle all Trump Offerings together.
Reveal 1 Trump Offering at random.
The rank of the revealed card becomes the Trump Rank for the entire round.
Set all Trump Offering cards aside until the round ends.
Only their rank matters for determining trump.
3. Trick Phase
Each round consists of exactly 8 tricks.
Leading
The First Player leads the first trick.
The winner of each trick leads the next trick.
A player may lead any card with one restriction:
A card of the Trump Rank may not be led unless every card remaining in that player's hand is also a Trump Rank card.
Trump may still be played normally when following suit or when unable to follow suit.
Following Suit
After a card is led, each other player plays one card clockwise.
Players must follow the led suit if able.
If unable to follow suit, a player may play any card, including a Trump Rank card.
Being trump does not override the requirement to follow suit.
Example
The Trump Rank is 7 and Hearts are led.
If you hold:
- K♥
- 7♠
you must play the K♥ because you can follow Hearts.
You may not play the 7♠ instead simply because it is trump.
However, if you hold no Hearts, you may play the 7♠.
Determining the Trick Winner
If one or more cards of the Trump Rank were played:
- Trump beats every non-trump card.
- If multiple Trump Rank cards were played, compare them by suit: Spades > Hearts > Diamonds > Clubs .
If no Trump Rank card was played:
- the highest-ranked card of the led suit wins.
Cards played outside the led suit that are not trump cannot win the trick.
The trick winner leads the next trick.
Scoring a Trick
After winning a trick, look at the suit of the card that won the trick.
If a Matching Suit Token Remains
Take one available 2-point Suit Token matching that suit.
If That Suit Stack Is Empty
If all three matching 2-point Suit Tokens have already been taken, take one 5-point Bonus Token instead.
The trick that removes the third and final 2-point Suit Token still scores 2 points.
Only later tricks won with that suit earn a 5-point Bonus Token.
Example
All three Heart tokens are still available.
- First Heart-winning trick: 2 points
- Second Heart-winning trick: 2 points
- Third Heart-winning trick: 2 points
The Heart stack is now empty.
The next trick won by a Heart earns a 5-point Bonus Token.
Continue until all 8 tricks have been played.
4. Cleanup Phase
After the eighth and final trick:
- Record each player's score for the round.
- Return all scoring tokens to the center.
- Rebuild each suit stack with three matching 2-point Suit Tokens.
- Return all five 5-point Bonus Tokens to the common supply.
- Collect all cards, including the Trump Offerings and any undealt cards.
- Shuffle the full 52-card deck.
- Pass the Dealer role clockwise.
- Deal 9 cards to each player and begin the next round.
The player immediately clockwise from the new Dealer becomes the First Player.
End of the Game
The game ends after 4 complete rounds.
Add each player's scores from all four rounds.
The player with the highest total score wins.
Tiebreakers
If two or more players are tied:
- The tied player who collected the most 5-point Bonus Tokens during the final round wins.
- If still tied, compare the cards played by the tied players in the eighth and final trick. The highest-ranked card wins, using normal rank and then suit order.
- If still tied, share the victory.

Frequently asked questions
Questions and clarifications
When does a 5-point Bonus Token replace a Suit Token?
Only after all three 2-point Suit Tokens for the winning card's suit have already been taken. The trick that takes the third and final Suit Token still scores 2 points; a later trick won by that suit scores a 5-point Bonus Token.
Can I lead a card of the Trump Rank?
Only if every card remaining in your hand is also a Trump Rank card. Trump may still be played normally when following suit or when you cannot follow suit.
Can I combine the two Offers I receive before choosing cards?
No. Resolve each neighbor's 3-card Offer separately. Choose exactly 2 cards from one Offer and return 1 before resolving the other Offer.
