Components
- 1 standard deck
- 36 cubes, tokens, or coins
- Paper and pencil for scoring
Setup
Use Aces through 9s of all four suits for a 36-card deck. Aces are 1, other cards are face value, and suits have no effect. Deal 9 cards face down in a 3×3 grid. Keep the rest undealt. Each player begins with 9 cubes.
Objective
Peek at hidden cards, stake cubes, and create rows or columns totaling exactly 9. After four rounds, the player with the most cubes remaining wins.
Playing the Round
If you have at least 1 cube available, choose one action. With no cubes available, you are out for the remainder of the round.
Peek
Set aside 1 cube and secretly look at one face-down card, then return it face down. You may only Peek at cards with no cubes on them.
Stake
Place 1 cube on one card without looking at it. A card may hold at most 3 cubes, including no more than 1 of your color.
Pass
Set aside 2 cubes and take no Peek or Stake action. If you have only 1 cube, set that cube aside.
ENNEA
Declare “ENNEA!” and set all cubes remaining in your current pool aside.
Ending & Resolving a Round
A round ends when all players are out of cubes or a player calls ENNEA. After a call, each other player gets one final Stake or Pass; no Peek. Reveal the grid.
For each player, every row or column containing at least 2 of their cubes is a Staked Line. Add the values of the cards holding that player’s cubes in the line.
- Exactly 9: successful ENNEA; all your cubes in that line are protected.
- Any other total: failed line; remove 1 unprotected cube from that line.
Resolve all successful lines and protection before removing cubes for failures. A cube protected by one successful ENNEA cannot be removed by another failed line. A lone cube is not a Staked Line and is not lost simply for being alone.
If you complete no successful ENNEA, you lose at least 1 cube total that round. This is a minimum loss, not an additional penalty. Remaining cubes form your next pool; lost cubes leave the game.
Next Round & Game End
Create a new 3×3 grid from 9 undealt cards. Rotate the starting player clockwise. The game ends after 4 rounds. Most cubes wins; if tied, the tied player who most recently called ENNEA wins. If none did, they share the victory.
